Daily Prompt: Necessity is the Mother of Invention

Imagine, in great detail, an invention that could help reverse pollution — describe for us how your invention works and how it will help save the planet.

I sometimes find myself day dreaming about a futuristic version of a world where everything is economical, environmentally friendly. A world where everything is recycled. A world where fossil fuels are no longer used, nor produced. A world where cars run on electricity, and all the electricity is powered by giant solar / wind / water powered farms.

At some point, the ability to time travel is perfected, and it opens up a gateway to a parallel dimension, where the earth has become very bleak and dystopian.

Rather than create an invention that would prevent the demise of modern society, and rather than lead it to it’s dishevelled future, we simply go back and implement a series of immediate changes to society to enable the world to mend, and sustain itself.

The concept is simple, protect the earth.

Our people go back in time to this parallel world when things started to fall apart. We convince them that clean energy solutions are what is going to save the planet.

The first thing we implement are ways to either minimise carbon emissions, whilst at the same time, developing a filtration system for carbon emissions. There are a couple of idea types:

  • A physical filter at the site of the carbon emissions from things like smoke-stacks used in industry, which then turns the smoke / vapour into a liquid, which is collected, treated with chemicals that are safe on the environment, and used for other purposes like turning into a manufacturing product like plastic
  • A special chemical that neutralises carbon emissions already in the atmosphere

It would become mandatory for ALL buildings to have solar panels for generation and storage of electricity. There would also be massive solar farms installed in and around cities and townships to offset, and in some cases, become completely independent of existing electricity providers.

Development and installation of wind-power farms.

Governments opposed to the idea would be overthrown by the people.

Cars would no longer require petrol / diesel to operate. Cars would slowly all be replaced with electric cars, which would be subsidised by the motoring industry and government. The cars being replaced would then be melted down and become recycled steel, which, in turn would be used in the construction of solar panels and wind turbines.

In the meantime, it would be mandatory to have exhaust filters on vehicles, which would neutralise exhuast emissions.

Public transport would be heavily developed as an attempt to get more cars off the road, and instead, people would catch energy efficient electric transport, or ride bikes. Bikes would also use the pedal power to generate it’s own small reserve of energy which would be used to power bike and helmet lights, as well as charge small devices like phones / GPS. Or, alternatively, the power generated on the bikes, could then be transferred to a local storage facility at a bike hub. A bike hub would be located at numerous locations around the city, and even in larger office / residential buildings. Energy produced could then be transferred into the building, to be utilised along with the solar energy it produces.

The electric cars would also have this facility – as they drive, they create energy, which is stored. This energy can then either be used to power the car, or can be transferred when it is connected to a charging station and either be stored in a home storage facility, in a building storage facility or distributed amongst the community when out and about in public.

Recycling would become more intensive and practical. Almost everything would be recycled. Garbage would be heavily minimised and the requirement of landfill would fall dramatically.

Food scraps would be collected by homeless shelters and turned into meals, or alternatively, turned into compost and used in public parks / gardens.

Rain water would become a requirement for all buildings (along with solar power). Large underground tanks would be required to catch all run off, and all water from roads, highways etc, would all be channelled to large collection tanks where it would be filtered, and treated. It would be safe for the environment, and safe for human consumption, but would primarily be used for water in the home ie showers / baths / kitchen etc fighting fires – predominantly bushfires; car washing services, showers and baths.

‘Grey Water’ run-off from sinks, showers and baths, would also be collected and either used for watering gardens etc.

Flushed toilets would continue to then go to proper treatment plants where that water would be treated and recycled to continue to be used for flushing toilets, and watering parks / gardens.

After watching this video, nuclear power would be completely abolished. There would be research efforts put into place to stop the contamination spread, and to neutralise the contamination of the oceans.
