Daily Prompt – Futures Past

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? How close or far are you from that vision?

Well, let’s just put it this way, as a 31yr old, I still have no fucking idea what I want to be when I grow up…

As a kid I had dreams about being anything and everything from a famous dancer to a pilot to a baker. As I got older it changed to doing things like being a Hollywood sitcom writer, famous pastry chef, or backup dancer for Janet Jackson. But the truth is, I still have no idea. I have a full time job, as well as another part time job, neither of which actually allow me any sort of progression or further development.

That can be quite hard to acknowledge, especially when the part time job I have is something that I’m so truly passionate about. It’s something that I give my heart and soul to, and due to politics, I eke getting shut down when I talk about aspirations and further self development. It’s hard to support an industry when the people who matter don’t support me. As for my other job, I’m stuck in a bit of a rut. There’s literally nowhere for me to go and if I want something more, something more fulfilling, it would mean having to look for a job somewhere else, and just the thought of it terrifies me.

Given my original career ‘dreams’ from days gone by, clearly I’m nowhere near where I wanted to be. It’s somewhat disheartening, but isn’t that life? You just have to roll with the punches and adapt.
