Today’s Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere). How are you taking advantage of the extra hours of light this time of year? Do you like it, or do you already miss earlier sunsets?
Well, here in the Southern Hemisphere we had the Winter Solstice, meaning the shortest day of the year. Turns out some people don’t actually know what that means.
When talking to a couple of people at the gym about it, and telling them it was the shortest day of the year, it was met with several puzzled looks. Turns out that understanding what it means isn’t as common as I assumed.
‘but how can it be the shortest day? Aren’t there 24hrs in every day?’
‘So how many hours does the day change by?’
‘Does this mean I get to finish work earlier?’
‘Will my phone automatically update?’
When faced with questions like this, it’s hard to automatically react with a slap to the face.
