We all have strange relationships with punctuation — do you overuse exclamation marks? Do you avoid semicolons like the plague? What type of punctuation could you never live without? Tell us all about your punctuation quirks!
I have a couple of punctuation quirks, now that I think about it. I have a tendency to use a lot of full-stops either at the end or beginning of…
…a sentence. I also wind myself using waaay too many vowels when exaggerating words, and I also have a tendency to use a few too many exclamation points!!!!!
I’ve only really noticed these moreso since I’ve started blogging, but I’ve also noticed that I use italics quite regularly when I want to emphasise a particular word or phrase. Most of the time when I write, I want to try and convey the tone of the voice that I hear in my head whilst I’m structuring a blog post… Sometimes it works and sometimes it completely misses the mark.
I think that things like apostrophes and inverted commas have been the best for me when I find myself doing a creative piece that has quite a lot of dialogue in it. However, in saying that, I did write one piece that incorporated dialogue between two people, but also one persons inner monologue as well – trying to work out how to actually write that and make it make sense to the reader was a bit of a struggle, so we can thank text alignment as well for that one!!
