When was the last time a movie, a book, or a television show left you cold despite all your friends (and/or all the critics) raving about it? What was it that made you go against the critical consensus?
GAME. OF. FUCKING. THRONES!!!
Oh my god, I can’t quite put my finger on it, but this was one of those shows that was produced for HBO, and when it came out, people were losing their shit all over the world.
It became THE show to be watching. Everybody was watching it. I watched the first season and really struggled to get into it. That whole story line of ye olde kingdoms, and knights, and wars etc, absolutely does my head in. It also doesn’t help that another show, Vikings, was also on at the same time, and they went hand in hand.
I only raised an eyebrow at Vikings because our very own Aussie, Travis Fimmel is in it. Travis was originally a male model who became a name after his campaign with Calvin Klein:
As the American’s would say, he certainly looks like he was corn fed 😉 But then after dropping off the radar, perhaps because he was too busy looking like the lost Hanson brother, he popped up in Vikings, as the scruffalicious Ragnar… however, my interest in Vikings didn’t even last the whole first episode… but everybody around me seemed to be obsessed with it.
And of course, how could I forget True Blood?? Now in it’s seventh season (thank god!) it’s a show that really should have ended last season because it’s storylines have just become far too ridiculous, and it’s clear that the writers are clutching at straws for ideas for each season and individual episodes.
Admittedly, I enjoyed the first couple of seasons, but then it started to just get a bit ridiculous, and I lost interest. Unfortunately, I was the only one, because in the office, all I’d hear about was Sookie-this and Bill-Compton-that. And I’d just be sitting there rolling my eyes wishing that the painful conversations would just end.
On the flip side, there were a few shows that I absolutely loved, which unfortunately got cancelled. Shows like Last Resort, and The New Normal were shows which I thought were fantastic, but unfortunately were both cancelled.
