How often do you get to (or have to) be awake for sunrise? Tell us about what happened the last time you were up so early (or late…).
In an ideal world, having to get up during the a.m. wouldn’t exist, and a sunrise would only be for crazy people who enjoy being sleep deprived.
In saying that, I will admit that as much as I whinge and carry on about any time I have to get up before the sun has risen, it is quite nice to be able to see the sun rise. It just means that I’m incredibly fucking tired for the rest of the day and will probably want to be in bed by 6pm, if I haven’t already fallen asleep on the bus home from work beforehand.
The last time I was up at some ungodly hour, I was getting up to go to the gym. Now, this is something that I firmly stand against every other day, however, I came to realise that my plans that particular evening would prevent me from doing my daily rehab programme, so I decided to go first thing in the morning.
My alarm went off at 5:30am, and any other time this happens, it’s a real struggle to get out of bed – usually because I only went to sleep at 12:30 – 1:00am. This particular morning, I was already awake. Not like, awake as in ‘I really just want to stay in bed for another 4hrs’, but awake as in ‘my alarm hasn’t even gone off yet and I’m so awake, I feel like I’ve had two coffees already’.
That feeling didn’t last very long.
It had pretty much left my body by the time I got dressed. Stepping out of the apartment building at 6am into the darkness in my gym shorts in winter WAS A BIG FUCKING MISTAKE!! Bare legs and a balmy winter morning of 1°(c) is not a great combination, but it certainly wakes you up. The other thing I hate about those moments is being dressed and going somewhere AND IT’S STILL NIGHT TIME!! If there’s no sun yet, it’s still considered night. However, laying on the gym floor on the foam roller looking out the giant floor to ceiling windows as the sun started to rise was kinda nice.
…but I’m not necessarily in a hurry to repeat that experience.
I started to go out for my runs at 6am as I am training for a marathon and don’t want to push my son in the buggy while running. I find it kind of relaxing when it is still dark and the streets are nearly empty.
Not so nice though, when some streets are quite dark and you stumble more than run!
