Stephanie knew something didn’t feel right in her apartment; as though there was a presence there, but she couldn’t quite determine whether it was good or bad.
Being a more spiritual person as opposed to a religious person, Stephanie had had several encounters with what she considered people from ‘the other side’.
Her very first encounter when Stephanie was probably seven years old, and her cousin, Joseph, was only 5. Stephanie was sitting at her dresser brushing the hair on her Barbie doll, when she felt a shiver down her spine.
She looked up in the mirror, but saw nobody behind her. Thinking that it was Joseph, she placed the doll on the dresser and quickly opened the cupboard doors. Nope, he wasn’t there. She looked under the bed, and he wasn’t there either. She looked all over her room and couldn’t find him, so she squealed.
Her mother came running into the room, ‘JOSEPH’S ANNOYING ME!! HE KEEPS TOUCHING ME!!’. Her mother looked at her puzzled, ‘What do you mean, honey? What’s Joseph done to you?’
‘HE HIT ME ON THE SHOULDER WHEN I WAS BRUSHING BARBIE!’
‘When?
‘JUST THEN!’
‘No he didn’t darling, he’s in the loungeroom playing with his cars. You know, you shouldn’t tell fibs because it’s naughty. Now go back to playing Barbie’s in your room, okay?’ She gave her a cuddle and a kiss on the forehead and sent her back to her room.
As Stephanie walked back to her room, she noticed that her Barbie wasn’t sitting on the dresser any more. It had been placed on the chair instead. Stephanie didn’t really understand how it had moved, but didn’t think much about it.
She picked up the doll and sat back in the chair, and began brushing the hair again, when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Stephanie quickly looked up into the mirror and saw a figure. The shadowy woman raised a finger to her lips, ‘Shhhh…’ and then just as quickly faded away.
However, that was twenty-seven years ago and she was a grown up now. She never forgot that moment, and always wondered who that woman was, and wondered if she was still around.
Stephanie got out her stick of sage, and set it on fire, walking around the apartment, opening all the doors and windows to smoke out all the bad energy that she could feel around her. As she walked past one of the mirrors, she noticed something in the reflection. She turned back to look at the arm chair, and saw nothing there. When she glanced back at the arm chairs reflection, she saw somebody sitting there.. a small girl, brushing the hair of a Barbie doll.
