What’s the best present you’ve ever given someone?
One of the best presents I’ve ever given somebody would have to be the SodaStream that I bought for Hulk last year (2014).
For a number of months we really enjoyed drinking sparkling water, either by itself or with a twist of lemon, and at any one time, we would usually have at least half-a-dozen empty bottles in the kitchen, waiting to be taken down to the recycling bins.
During this time, SodaStream had begun a heavy marketing campaign, and in passing, I casually enquired as to whether or not Hulk would ever entertain the idea of getting one. This was met with something along the lines of ‘I would never have one of those in MY kitchen, besides, we don’t have the bench space!’, which was true, at the time we didn’t have the bench space, but I was quite surprised at how he immediately dismissed the idea.

A number of weeks later, they played a different commercial, this time showing a different model to the regular one that had constantly graced the television screen, and I didn’t realise that there were any other models. Without hesitation I jumped onto their website and was quite surprised at just how many different models there were… And then I saw her.
She was so pretty. She had shiny buttons and a fancy LCD screen and was fully automated. As soon as I saw her, I knew that I would need to own her immediately. I did my research and found nothing online, so called a number of individual stores trying to find this particular model, and as soon as I hung up the phone, I raced out the door to go and pick it up. I just hadn’t anticipated the box being as big as it was, nor as heavy as it was – it wasn’t exactly the most convenient item to bring home via public transport.
I remember when I gave it to him, and he was shocked by the sheer size of the box, but when he opened it, there was a moment of what seemed to be disappointment on his face. I’m not sure whether it was because he was expecting something else, or whether it was because he didn’t really have the desire to have a SodaStream, and now had to at least pretend to be the slightest bit excited by it… But once we had it set up and made our first bottle of what is now referred to as ‘Sippy water’, we haven’t looked back.
