17 Dec – Knowing Sadness

Do you believe you need to know sadness in order to appreciate happiness?

This is rather perplexing, as I can sit here are write arguments for both aspects of this.

My personal opinion is that yes, you do need to know sadness to be able to truly appreciate happiness.

You need to experience that pain, and sorrow. You need to feel the hurt. You need to have experienced that hurt in your soul, and go through the process of dealing with such pain, because when you get through it, and come out on the other side of it, you’ll have grown and learnt and you will be changed as a result of it; it’s a learning experience that we all need to experience.

Once you’ve endured something like that, then when you find your happiness, it becomes so much more special, and so much more significant. It’s something that can’t really be adequately expressed using words; it needs to be experienced first hand. It’s the kind of happiness that allows you to feel like a weight has been lifted; like a chapter has been closed; a moment that lets the light in, washing away the darkness, and makes you feel whole again. The kind of happiness that puts a smile on your face, and a smile within your soul.

By going through the pain of sadness, it makes you value true happiness so much more, and makes you want to hold onto it.

We all need more happiness in our lives.
