Daily Prompt – Getting Seasonal

Do you miss the holiday season when it’s months away? When you’re in the midst of holiday madness, do you enjoy it, or can’t wait for it to be over?

This recent holiday season, I really couldn’t be bothered. I was so completely disorganised, it was embarrassing.

Daily Prompt – Shaken and Stirred

What’s the most elaborate, complicated meal you’ve ever cooked? Was it a triumph for the ages, or a colossal fiasco? Give us the behind-the-scenes story (pictures are welcome, of course).

Hmm, thus is kinda tough, because I’ve challenged myself to a few different cooking challenges.

May 26 – Summer Food

Tell us your favourite summer food.

…WATERMELON!!!

I love watermelon in Summer. It’s so juicy and refreshing. I’d love to just grab half a watermelon, and a melon baller, and scoop tiny balls of pink juicy goodness out whilst sitting on the couch watching some stories. It’s the best!

Alternatively, I love things like smoothies… full of fruit and ice and sorbet… yum yum yum yum yum.

And salads. Salads with coriander and chili and prawns. Summer is the perfect time for prawns. Prawns, scallops, squid… lots of it. In my tummy.

One of my other favourite foods in summer is sorbet. Blood orange sorbet. Ooh yes please!! So incredibly refreshing.

May 16 – Favourite Restaurant

Tell us about your favourite restaurant.

Oh easy, it’s a sushi train place in the city.

Most of the time whenever Hulk and I want to go on a man date, we’ll always try and get a  booking there first, before we try anything else. It’s our favourite place, and we’ve been going there for a number of years.

It’s a tiny little place, that can only hold maybe thirty people. It’s quite narrow and quite cramped, and every time we’ve been there, it’s always been packed, sometimes to the point where you simply can’t book a table, or have to wait anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour or sometimes longer.

The best seats in the house are all situated around the actual sushi train, because it makes it so much easier to access the food as it goes around, meaning that you always get the first / best opportunity to get the food as soon as it’s plated, so it’s fresh and if it’s cooked, it’s still quite hot.

I think our favourite seats are right across from the kitchen / preparation area – we both love watching them work in the kitchen, preparing the dishes with such precision and finesse. As we’re both big ‘foodies’, we love to see all the work that goes in behind the scenes to preparing dishes. Most people wouldn’t like to have those kind of seats, perhaps because they don’t necessarily think about (or care about) the work that goes into the dish, they just want it to look good and taste incredible.

Daily Prompt: Time After Time

Traditions: we’ve all got ‘em. They might be family dinners on special occasions, or having a particular kind of cake on your birthday (Jeanne Cake, natch), or popcorn at the movies, or meeting your friend for a 5k run in the park, rain or shine, every Sunday morning. What are your favorite traditions, large and small? What is it about your traditions that keep them going strong for you?

I’m sitting here at work thinking about this… and traditions to me are more like routines… but the routine, I guess, could be considered a tradition in this context.

I have a few of them…

First and foremost, is the mandatory choc-top ice cream and giant Coke Zero whenever we go to the movies. Whether it’s 10am, or 10pm, it’s a must. And if I decide not to and instead have lollies or popcorn, I end up feeling uneasy / restless for the whole movie!

One that we’ve been enjoying for the last few months or so is having ‘open burgers’ whenever we go to Grill’d. If I’m feeling super hungry, I may even ask for an extra patty, but regardless of what burger we get, one of us always orders chips. OMG Grill’d chips are just the best!

Sidenote: I still don’t understand why it’s called an open burger. The ‘burger’ part implies that there is a bun involved, but it’s made without the bun, so basically, it’s just a salad with a meat patty!

The last couple of months have also seen a change in our diet (again, another one involving food!!). This one isn’t every week, but it’s happened a few times per month, which is enough to become more of a habit, and that’s McDonald’s Wednesdays. What happens is, Hulk will pick me up from the train station when I finally finish my second job on a Wednesday night, and then we end up going to Maccas drive-thru and ordering two of their wraps (or sometimes I go for the salad). It’s a convenience thing because we can’t be bothered cooking because it’s already late enough, and having to cook would make it even later.

This just reminded me of a tradition at work… Burrito Fridays! It says it all really. Friday lunchtime – burrito. Yum yum in my tum tum!!

OOH, OOH, I actually do have one that doesn’t revolve around food!!

When I’m finding myself killing a couple of hours in the city between job A and Job B, I (oh...) find myself in the food court (…there it is. So much for not involving food!) of a shopping centre doing some catch-up blogging. That’s something that I’ve been doing every week for the past few months, and it’s actually enabled me to a) kill that void of time and b) use it productively.
