Daily Prompt – Sleepy Time

More and more of us go to bed too late because of sleep procrastination. What are the nighttime rituals that keep you up before finally dozing off?

I’m what is referred to as a ‘night-owl’, because I like to stay up late at night. However, when you also have to get up early in the morning, it’s becomes a bit of a nightmare.

Daily Prompt – Because the Night

Are you a night owl or are you the early bird? What’s your most productive time of day? When do you do your best work?

Since I was a little kid, I have always been a night owl. I always wanted to be able to stay up late, and even then, just the notion of staying up until midnight seemed like such a cool achievement.

…nowadays, i’m lucky if I’m in bed before midnight! When it’s the weekend, or I’m on holidays, I’ll easily stay up until 3 or 4am doing…whatever. Playing around on iTunes checking out new music, or writing (catch up) blog posts, or even just sitting up playing video games.

The last couple of weekends I’ve been up until about 4am with friends who have come back to our place after a night out clubbing for nachos and ice cream before going to bed and then sleeping until Midday.

I will admit though, I have gone through phases where I’ve been the early bird who’s up at 5 or 5:30am and at the gym for a 6am class,… but that usually only lasts a couple of mornings before I find myself collapsing on the bed on a Friday afternoon after work and then sleeping for about 15 hours.

When it comes to work, I find that I’m the most productive when I’m the only person in the office. Seeing as how almost everybody works a strict 9-5, sometimes I’ll be there at 7:30am if I have to get some stuff done, or I’ll be there until 7:30pm absolutely powering through all my work, and making sure that everything gets finished before I head off. I just find that I can smash through all my jobs in a couple of hours, rather than it taking me an entire day, because when I’m there by myself I’m not being constantly interrupted every couple of minutes.

Day 10 – Morning Person or Night Owl?

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Oh I’m a night-owl through and through. I’m not entirely sure why that is, or even why, but generally speaking you’re one or the other.

I think it started when I was a kid, and being able to stay up until 9pm was a really big deal, considering back then my bed time was 8pm… sometimes I could stretch it to 8:30pm if there was something we were watching on tv as a family, but generally, it was early to bed. How terrible it must have been as a child to be forced into having 10-11hrs sleep every night!?! How horrendous!

That’s practically child abuse.

I remember on Thursday nights, I was always allowed to stay up until 9:30pm, which, back then, seemed to be soooooo late, only because mum would let me watch Fast Forward (which I also blame for the way I turned out!).

Sometimes on Fridays nights, we’d hire some videos (yes, VHS… remember those??) and then sit up until midnight with pizza and chocolate and watch a couple of movies. That was a real treat to me. Now, it just sounds like somebody’s typical Tuesday night after work.

Unfortunately, the desire to stay up late was something that was shared by most of mum’s side of the family. Especially when a few of us had a get-together. I remember on several occasions when we had family over, we’d have a bonfire and put on a huge spread for dinner and it was great… and then **BAM** it’s 3-4am and everybody is wondering where the time went.

Now, going to bed around midnight is pretty much standard practise for me. Long working days, late dinners, and far too many shows to watch (ie. catch-up on!). If only I could still earn money, and not have to go to work so I could spend my mornings sleeping in!!
