Daily Prompt – Uncanned Laughter

A misused word, a misremembered song lyric, a cream pie that just happened to be there: tell us about a time you (or someone else) said or did something unintentionally funny.

I often find that I have these kind of experiences on a regular basis, because most of the time I’m doing or saying something stupid, or, basically, just being my generally entertaining self… so it’s somewhat difficult to actually pinpoint one particular moment.

The other problem with this is that most of the time, I’m usually by myself when it happens, and have nobody to share the moment with.

One of the frequent things I do is sing the wrong song lyrics. At first, I’ll just sing what I think are the words, and then I’ll think about it and realise that it doesn’t sound right, but I still sing it anyway. But then I get annoyed and have to look up the lyrics online to correct myself, and most of the time, whatever I’m babbling is so far from what the real words are, I just sit there staring at my screen grinning like an idiot.

The other ‘habit’ I guess we’ll call it, is getting dressed when I’m not thinking properly, ie half asleep or is such a rush I can’t really concentrate much. Generally it’s not until I’ve arrived at an event, or halfway through a gym class that I realise my top is on inside out or my singlet is backwards, or sometimes both.

Recently I purchased a new jacket. One morning I decided to wear it to work, and it wasn’t until I took it off just before lunch that I realised the tags were not only still attached, but sticking out quite clearly… And nobody decided to tell me.

Daily Prompt – Off The Shelf

Take a look at your bookcase. If you had enough free time, which book would be the first one you’d like to reread? Why?

My problem is not the books that I want to re-read, but moreso the books that I’d like to actually read for the first time!  Continue reading

Daily Prompt – 10,000 Spoons

…When all you need is a knife might not be ironic, but it is unfortunate. Add your own verse, stanza, or story of badly-timed annoyance to Alanis Morissette’s classic.

– Turning up to the gym with everything except your runners.

– Turning up to the gym without a change of clothes after your sweaty workout.

– Leaving home extra early, only to be caught in traffic / have public transport delays, and end up being late anyway.

– Getting excited about going out for waffles, only to arrive and the store has closed.

– Planning a day out in the sunshine, only for it to turn nasty and rain instead. Or, being at home sick when the weather is perfect outside.

– Going out to a club, only to not get in after waiting in line for 45mins.

– Going out for an all-day breakfast, which they stop serving at midday.

– Hosting a party that everybody says they’re going to, and nobody turns up.

– Double-booking yourself for two events, and being forced to choose. Only to then have the one you choose fall through, and the one you gave up fall-through as well.

– Buying two tickets to a show, and nobody wants the other ticket.

– Buying an expensive pair of headphones, and they sound cheap and terrible.

– Buying a brand new car and crashing it on the way home.

– Getting ‘bumped up’ to an earlier flight, only to have it grounded.

– Arriving interstate, only to find your luggage is in a different state. Then buying emergency clothes, and having your luggage turn up at your hotel… after you’ve already returned home.

– Planning, booking and paying for overseas travel, and your employer cancels your leave approval.

– Having all your bills fall due on payday.

– Paying for express international shipping, and it takes 4 weeks instead of 4 days.

– Being dumped on your birthday.

It’s all a little too ironic.

Daily Prompt – Sleepy Time

More and more of us go to bed too late because of sleep procrastination. What are the nighttime rituals that keep you up before finally dozing off?

I’m what is referred to as a ‘night-owl’, because I like to stay up late at night. However, when you also have to get up early in the morning, it’s becomes a bit of a nightmare.

Daily Prompt – Longing for Gravity

You are on a mission to Mars. Because of the length of of the journey, you will never be able to return to Earth. What about our blue planet will you miss the most?

May 19 – Nourishment

What do you do to nourish yourself apart from food?

Well, perhaps the most nourishing thing I do for myself now is writing. Although it may only be general blogging and not necessarily anything substantial, it’s still better than sitting there talking about it or thinking about it but not actually following it through. I think that was perhaps the most detrimental part – doing all this talking and planning and constantly saying things like ‘I should start writing… Maybe I’ll start a blog…!’ but then nothing came of it and all of a sudden a couple more months have passed and I’ve achieved nothing.

That day I decided to start a blog, I really had no idea whatsoever as to what I was doing, what I’d be writing or even what direction I was going in… And now, I’ve written almost 350 posts and a few creative pieces and I’ve enjoyed it quite a lot. I have realised that there is still a lot inside my head that I want to write about, however I’m still quite apprehensive and guarded about sharing certain aspects of my life with my audience. I have also realised that I really love writing creative pieces, especially when I get so absorbed in an idea and it just flows – I just wish that I was able to fully dedicate as much time as needed in order to get a whole creative piece out without it taking a few days, or a couple of weeks.

I’ve missed writing creative pieces… I need more of that.

If you know of any great blogs or writers sites for some good creative prompts, let me know in the comments section below 🙂

Daily Prompt – A Form of Flattery

Write a post about any topic you want, but in the style of an author or a blogger you admire.

When I first read this, I instantly thought about Allie who writes Hyperbole and a Half and I remember the very first time I saw her blog. A coworker had shown it to me and I instantly fell in love with it.

So I guess if I could draw, I’d want to be able to draw like her and tell stories the way she does… But I just can’t draw for shit, so instead, I’ll just link to her page instead.

here’s Allie reading from her book at Google…

Daily Prompt – The Kindness Of Strangers

When was the last time a stranger did something particularly kind, generous, or selfless for you? Tell us what happened!

Usually it’s the other way around – what did I do to a complete stranger that was completely selfless… but to have it this way, hmmm, that’s actually quite tough.

I’ve been trying to think about this for a while and one that springs to mind was a few years ago. I was interstate and went to one of those small Chinese massage places. The one’s that look kinda dodgy. The ones where they don’t actually speak any English, and generally don’t actually understand what you’re saying.

This one day I went in to have my calves and feet massaged after a few hard days of dancing and bouncing around, and I pointed them out to this lady, who smiled and nodded and took me into a room and got me to strip down to my jocks and cover myself with a towel. After trying to explain over and over again that I wanted my feet done, she still didn’t get it. SO I just went with it. Granted I only asked for a 30min massage, but it turned into 45 mins as she massaged my neck, shoulders, back, glutes, and in the last 5 minutes, quickly got to my calves and feet.

I was kind of annoyed, but I also felt a bit guilty about being annoyed. Yes, she didn’t give me what I wanted, and by the time she had finished, somebody who spoke english had returned to the store. I explained to them the situation, and said although the massage was really quite good, it wasn’t what I asked for, despite trying to tell her several times.

The guy apologised profusely, and explained everything to the lady in Chinese. She felt so sorry, and started talking to me in Chinese, I kept telling her that I didn’t understand, and had to use the guy to translate for me. I said that it was okay, and next time I come back, I’ll have a proper foot / calf massage instead. She kept talking to me, and grabbed my hand, motioning me towards a chair. I tried refusing, but she wasn’t having it. She literally dragged me across the room and forced me into the chair. The guy came with us and translated what she was saying, explaining that she felt so bad for not providing the service that I asked for, and instead, would do so now, for free. I kept saying that wasn’t necessary, and that I would come back another time to pay for it myself. She still refused.

As I sat in the chair, she grabbed my foot, and pulled off my shoe and sock, and then the other, and pushed me backwards to recline. Somebody brought her a small bucket of warm water, and she put my feet in there to soak.

Meanwhile, the guy who was translating, began to give me a head massage, whilst she gave me a hand massage. After about ten minutes, the water had gone dark and had cooled considerably. She removed my feet, dried them, and gave me another 30min foot / calf massage. It was absolute heaven!!

By the time she finished, I was on cloud nine and felt incredible. At the same time, I also felt so guilty for even mentioning my frustration earlier – I didn’t want her to do anything out of anger or obligation, but at the same time, I was kind of glad that I did. For the following three days, every evening on the way back to my hotel, I called in there and had a 30min foot / calf massage, and always gave them a big tip. I believe in paying for quality, and this woman was fantastic.

She never needed to do what she did, but I had an instant respect for her for her decision to make me sit down again. It worked out in her favour, as it brought me back another three consecutive days.
