Daily Prompt – Ready, Set, Done #6

Our ten-minute free-write is back for another round! Tap away on whatever comes to mind, no filters attached. (Feel free to edit later, or just publish as-is).

Sarah woke to the sound of the rain outside her window. She rolled over to her side to look through the droplet-covered pane of glass, staring at the gloomy grey morning outside. ‘great’, she thought to herself, ‘i really don’t want to have to go out into that’.

Daily Prompt – Nosey Delights

From the yeasty warmth of freshly baked bread to the clean, summery haze of lavender flowers, we all have favorite smells we find particularly comforting. What’s yours?

Haven’t I already written one of these? Continue reading

Daily Prompt – Frame of Mind

If you could paint your current mood onto a canvas, what would that painting look like? What would it depict?

I’d paint something abstract, and use colour to represent mood. But how do you convey the feeling of people-catching-public-transport-are-so-fucking-stupid-it-makes-my-brain-hurt’?!?!? Continue reading

Daily Prompt – Memory on the Menu

Which good memories are better — the recent and vivid ones, or those that time has covered in a sweet haze?

Aren’t all memories better than none at all? Personally, I actually have quite vivid memories from my childhood, and what I experienced growing up…

…as for experiences I had a few months ago, or even twelve or more months ago… not a damn clue.

Daily Prompt – If I Ruled The World

You’ve been given the superpower to change one law of nature. How do you use it?

There is so much about this world that I would love to change, if I had the ability to do so, but to have to choose just one of those is actually quite hard – especially because changing one would certainly have a knock-on effect on the rest of the world.

Something akin to the theory that if you travel back in time and change something, even miniscule and insignificant, it will create major changes in the future, and completely alter history.

According to Wikipedia, there are 5 laws of nature – Physical, Natural, scientific, laws of science and law of the jungle, and most of these each have their own sub-set of laws, principles, theorems and equations. After doing some (heavy) reading on a few of them, I now find myself much more confused than I was to begin with. I’m reading a lot of big words, and have absolutely no idea what they actually mean… if anything, this prompt is making me feel quite unintelligent. Rapidly.

I’ve just read a few paragraphs regarding space-time continuum and black holes in space…

…and so now, my brain hurts. What was the question again?

Perhaps, instead of getting so literal with it, I might just state that if I could change anything, I’d get Mother Nature to get herself in check, and sort the weather out properly. Give the rain to the countries that need it the most – I’m lookin’ at you, Africa! And take more of that hot, sunny, dry weather further north to Europe. Nothing extreme, I’d just make sure that there are four distinct seasons again, and that it stays that way. I want nature and all that is in it to continue to survive and then thrive within more equalised ecosystems.

I don’t want to see any more David Attenborough documentaries talking about endangered animals dying in Africa because of the heat and the resulting lack of water. Sorry, nope. Not having it. Make it rain there, so they have water to drink and plants to eat. Make it rain so that third-world nations have much cleaner drinking water, and enriched soil so they can grow crops and feed themselves, rather than die from hunger and malnutrition.

Or maybe, I go one step further, and just give myself the power to close the hole in the ozone layer? That would probably assist with fixing a lot of problems. It’d help stop the polar ice-caps melting, it would help reduce global warming, but I think that there should be a trade off. If I give myself the power to fix the ozone layer, I should also be allowed to implement strategies and policies on earth that will also minimise greenhouse gasses which cause and exacerbate the hole in the ozone layer. Make it an international practice, and those who are non-compliant face heavy fines.

So really, I’m just being greedy, because I want a power that is two-fold.

Daily Prompt – Worst Case Scenario

Of all the awful possibilities, what’s the worst possible thing that could happen to you today? Now, what about the best?

This isn’t really an open ended question. The ultimate answer to the first part of this prompt, I would assume, would be death. The worst thing that could happen today is that I, or somebody I love, could die.

Daily Prompt: In the Summertime

Theoretically, summer will return to the polar-vortex-battered Northern Hemisphere. What are you looking forward to doing this summer? If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, what are your fondest memories of Summer past?

Well, for us here in ‘Straya, we get really hot summers… this past summer we saw some temperatures reach from between 46 – 48 degrees (celsius). I remember when I was a kid, we lived in the country and every summer we would have to endure 45-degree heat waves for up to two weeks at a time before we’d actually get a cool change come through.

As the world and society has evolved, along with the ozone layer and global warming, that has since changed. Living in Melbourne, I’ve noticed a distinct pattern in summer… it’ll get ridiculously hot for a few days in a row, then it will rain. Then it gets hot again, then it rains again. We’re fortunate enough to have air conditioning where I live as well as where I work, however catching public transport between the two of them can become quite a nightmare. A hot, sweaty, exhausting, sweaty, smelly, sweaty nightmare.

For me, the standout memories of this summer were extensive train delays due to track network upgrades; countless days of making my absolute favourite Watermelon Mocktail (Watermelon, fresh mint leaves, apple & mint juice, splash of lemon juice and ice – all whizzed up in a blender, and served over ice and some fresh mint leaves to garnish!); it was also a time of sleeping; blogging and PS3; copious amounts of food, but above all, the stress and drama revolving around Christmas.

What. A. Nightmare.

Surprisingly, not once did I get to go to the beach. I didn’t get to swim in the ocean. In fact, I barely managed to swim in a pool for most of summer. Granted I was also carrying a little excess weight, so getting my top off in public certainly wasn’t an option, but it’s disappointing that I didn’t even get the opportunity to visit the ocean.*sigh* I love the ocean. It’s so therapeutic for me.

Dec 5 – 10min Timer

Set a timer for 10 minutes and try to write your whole daily post.  Now go back and give yourself 5 more minutes to write about how you felt working under such a tight deadline.

um… what?

So, I always find these posts perhaps one of the most challenging. Write my whole daily post?? WRITE ABOUT WHAT, THOUGH?? You haven’t given me a topic to write about, and that’s the tough part.

When I’ve got a prompt to write about something specific, that’s fine. I can just focus my thoughts on that and just start tap, tap, tapping away on my keyboard, but when faced with something SO OPEN like this, it’s hard. I’m actually not sure why. I could quite easily crap on and on about, literally, anything, but I have nothing to focus on. No direction in which to go. Considering that the daily prompts are my daily posts, it should really give me an actual prompt, as well as the time challenge.

*checks the clock* 5:44min left. Ugh.

I really do wish I was at home today instead. The weather is quite bleak and cold and overcast. Great start to what is supposed to be our Summer. Instead, we’ve had more rain and cold weather, than sunshine and warmth. Stupid weather. It’s all messed up. I wish I was at home, in bed, in my onesie (it’s a Giraffe, by the way!) either watching all the cartoons waiting for me on my MacBook Pro, and / or writing on my blog, or developing ideas and prompts for another writing venture that I have in the back of my mind.

Or maybe I would just be sleeping instead. Or maybe reading – I do have a number of books I want to start reading. I really should read more.

…I’m so time poor.

The fact that I usually have to write these posts when I’m at work really says a lot. I know I shouldn’t be doing it, but I don’t have time otherwise. I really just need an hour or so each day to set aside, just to focus on writing. It’ll be great once the year is over and I’m finally on holidays, because then I can actually dedicate some proper time to the task, and not have to stress about hurrying through it, just to get it finished and out of the way.

*1min 46 seconds remain*

I want cake. I’m so hungry. It’s lunch time for me now, and the last thing I want to be having is tinned tuna. No thanks. It’s cold and miserable outside. I need something warm like a Tom Yum Soup, or some noodles, or a burrito. OOOHHH BURRITO!!

Actually, tomorrow is Burrito Friday. Crazy Cat Lady and I usually have Burrito Friday each week, although we’ve missed it the past couple of weeks because either I’ve been away, or she’s been away. But damn they are so tasty!

Hmmm… now I really want a burrito 😦

I should actually go for a walk and get something filling and hot and yummy. I really seem to have my mind set on getting a Tom Yum Soup… or maybe a Laksa? Who cares, really? I’m just hungry. I want to eat EVERYTHING. Crazy Cat Lady is suggesting a baked potato, or as we refer to them, berked perderder. Ermahgerd. Hmmm… I wonder if that’s a meme? I’m sure I saw it somewhere??

*google image search: berked perderder*
…ta-daaaaa!! One of my favourite memes ever.
*PHEW* Well, now that’s over, how do I feel about the time constraint? Well, now that I glance back over it, I’m actually surprised at how much I can achieve in 10mins when I’m writing, essentially, about nothing. Having the 10mins timer is actually a good thing, because it means there’s no time to fuck around. No time for distract… ooh, new emails… ooh… FB notifications…
It’s good because it forces you to get it done. Perhaps I should apply this kind of thing to all my future posts. Give myself a 15min timer to do all the typing and then if I want to add some pics, allow myself 5 mins to jazz it up a bit.
